Hardy responded to a Model Mayhem casting call by artist Peter Van Pelt for “life casting” models to create life-sized sculptures. The life-casting process has multiple steps and took 8 hours over two sessions to fully complete. Each body part, working up from Hardy’s legs to his head, was carefully covered with three layers of body-safe silicone and wrapped with plaster bandages for rigidity. Each piece is then carefully removed and they are assembled and joined together to form a mold from which a lifelike statue can be made. Hardy found the whole thing interesting and fun and can’t wait to see how the final piece turns out. He was the first full body—male or female— that the artist cast. The final piece will probably be a figure skater that will be displayed in art galleries.
